What Are E-Cigarettes?

If you regularly smoke cigarettes, there is a very high likelihood that you have thought about quitting at some point. You may even have tried to cut down on how often you smoke or to give up cigarettes altogether. However, it is also very likely that your attempts to stop smoking failed.

Finding it difficult to stop smoking is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, a very high percentage of smokers find it difficult or impossible to beat their addiction without help. For many people, one of the best smoking cessation aids currently available is e-cigarettes.

What Are Electronic Cigarettes?

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes or e-cigs, are small battery operated devices which emit a vapor which contains nicotine. You can get e-cigarettes which contain different strengths of nicotine, and some devices will even allow you to control the nicotine levels yourself.

Many smokers who find it difficult to quit are substituting tobacco cigarettes for e-cigarettes. The ability to regulate the nicotine can help you to gradually wean yourself off your addiction over a period of time. Electronic cigarettes also have the advantage of being healthier than tobacco cigarettes, as they contain nicotine but do not emit the same carcinogenic chemicals as regular cigarettes.

How Does An Electronic Cigarette Work?

The nicotine inside an e-cigarette is stored in a cartridge. It takes the form of a liquid, and the nicotine is usually combined with a harmless substance such as propylene glycol. When in use, the battery heats the liquid to create a vapor (in the same way that a kettle creates steam as it heats the water). When the vapor is inhaled, the user gets a small hit of nicotine which satisfies their craving.

The sensation and use of an electronic cigarette is similar to regular cigarettes, but it is not identical. When you light a cigarette you inhale smoke into your lungs, and the nicotine is absorbed into the body through the soft tissue. The vapor of an e-cigarette is not drawn so deeply into the body and therefore the nicotine is taken in through the cheeks instead. You absorb less of the nicotine, which can make them initially less satisfying for some heavy smokers.

Since electronic cigarettes produce vapor rather than smoke, their users are more typically called “vapers” rather than “smokers”. You may also come across the term “vaping”, which simply refers to the act of using an e-cigarette.

Are E-Cigarettes Dangerous?

A lot of people worry that e-cigarettes are no less dangerous than regular cigarettes, since they still contain nicotine. However, this worry is normally down to an incorrect assumption that nicotine is toxic. Although nicotine is very addictive there are few associated health problems – it is actually the tobacco in regular cigarettes which triggers serious disease.

The lack of smoke from e-cigarettes also makes them safer for bystanders. It is a much safer alternative if you have children in your home.

If you wish to give up cigarettes, e-cigs may be the right choice for you. They have fewer associated health risks and may help you to quit.
